We can't change reality, but apparently we can censor it when it makes us feel icky. At least this is what a group of students & staff at the University of Minnesota are trying to do. We all laugh when we hear the term "politically correct", we laugh and shrug it off, but when does it go too far? I believe we have gone too far when we start living in fantasy land to make us feel better. In a letter addressed to University Minnesota President Eric Kaler and Vice President Pamela Wheelock, members of several African American student groups & staff asked the university to stop using race when sending out a crime alert. Let me say that again. A group of black students and staff at the University of Minnesota don't want race to be used to describe a criminal suspect during crime alerts. The student organizations all agreed that "racial profiling is proven to inflict negative psychological effects on its victims.” While one might agree with this statement, it's besides the point in my opinion. These students must not understand that racial profiling is used to prevent crime, not after a crime is already committed. Racial profiling is making assumptions, unlike crime alert descriptions which are just facts. If there is a dangerous student on campus the students deserve to know what he looks like. Apparently school officials reported there have been 25 robberies in and around the University, an increase of 27 percent over the last few years. So......are we just supposed to guess the persons race? Or....why don't we just catch one person of each race and put them all in jail? I like to believe that I am good at seeing both sides of most issues, but not this time. Before anyone laughs and shrugs this off as silly college stuff, understand that this kind of thing is happening all over the country. Whether or not these groups succeed really doesn't matter. What matters is that they are thinking this way to begin with. At what point does common sense kick in? If a lot of black males are committing crimes, take your anger out on them, don't get mad at us for reporting it. This is the new world we live in, this insanity called "politically correct" has gotten so out of hand that we have finally hit a wall...it's called reality.- BDB
