Remember Rwanda

What was worse, the genocide itself or America doing nothing about it? In 1994 Bill Clinton was president of the United States, the same year a brutal civil war in the country of Rwanda broke out. Rwanda’s population of seven million was composed of three ethnic groups: Hutu (approximately 85%), Tutsi (14%) and Twa (1%) On April 6, 1994, a plane carrying President Habyarimana, a Hutu, was shot down. Violence began almost immediately after that. Under the cover of war, Hutu extremists launched their plans to destroy the entire Tutsi civilian population. Over the course of approximately 100 days, 800,000 men, women, and children perished in the Rwandan genocide, perhaps as many as three quarters of the Tutsi population. At the same time, thousands of Hutu were murdered because they opposed the killing campaign and the forces directing it. The Clinton Administration ignored powerful warnings of impending genocide, including a Central Intelligence Agency study saying half a million people could die if Rwanda exploded. The Clinton Administration opposed a move by the United Nations to stop the killing. The United Nations had to learn ''when to say no,'' President Clinton said at the time. So why is it so important to remember Rwanda? Because, apparently President Obama doesn't. Why do I say this? Because if he did, he wouldn't be allowing the same thing to take place. This time the genocide is against Christians, and it is happening all over the world everyday. The United States is well aware of the Christian persecution going on and chooses to do nothing. Christians are killed and churches are burned in Egypt; while Christians are either killed or systematically driven out of the country in Syria; and in Turkey Christian identity cards have a special code that prohibits Christians from taking certain jobs or getting certain benefits. There are trials going on now in Iran of Christians. In Iraq, seventy Christian churches have been blown up, and its Christian population has been all but driven out of the country. The persecution has spread to Africa where churches are attacked on a regular basis Northern Sudan is currently waging a crackdown against the remaining Christians there. Muslims are destroying Christian churches that have been established for hundreds if not thousands of years. This is just the tip of the iceberg. The United States looks back on this as a huge mistake, we were in a position to greatly reduce the killing in Rwanda, and we did nothing. With out a doubt, President Obama knows the plight of the Christians, he is either purposely allowing it or he doesn't care. Both conclusions are very troubling. Remember Rwanda Mr. President, because we haven't forgotten! - BDB
